Patient Finds Faith in Recovery

An Interview with Lauren

laurenCould you tell me a little about your situation leading up to Rogers?

I’ve been abusing drugs and alcohol since I was 18 years old. About 8months ago, my mom encouraged me to go to treatment, but I was afraid. I didn’t know what to expect and after all, what could I learn? After being at the Herrington Recovery Center, I have a wealth of new knowledge. Life still comes at me, but I can handle it now. I never thought I’d live to see my 24th birthday, and here I am!

Is there a moment that was significant to your recovery?

Spiritual care was a significant part of treatment for me. When I came to Rogers, I was spiritually bankrupt. Then one day I decided to go to the group session. It changed my life, and I came to believe very quickly. But it was all so new – I didn’t even know how to pray. The Chaplain told me, “Prayer isn’t about the position of the body, but the attitude of the heart.”

How does your spirituality impact your life today?

Spirituality immensely impacts my life today because I carry it with me at all times, regardless of the situation. Carrying spirituality with me means that I utilize the tools of the program and am in fit spiritual condition with the God of my understanding.

Could you give me an example of how spirituality helps you cope with a difficult situation?

After I left Roger’s, I went into a recovery home for women. It has been difficult for me to transition into this group situation. Living with spiritual principles allows me to be tolerant when personality conflicts arise.

How did you utilize the Spiritual Care program at Rogers?

I went to every group session and met with the Chaplain for an individual consultation. I was like a sponge, trying to absorb every piece of information thrown my way. I was desperate, because when I was abusing alcohol, recovery was a dream.

Spiritual Care is a free program offered to patients. Can you explain its importance in reference to your recovery process?

I give thanks to Rogers for saving my life. However, without the Spiritual Care program, I personally wouldn’t have been able to make it as far as I have come today. Without having a God of my understanding and spiritual principles in my life, it would be impossible for me to stay clean and sober. The Spiritual Care staff laid the foundation for me to learn to live a spiritual life that SAVED MY LIFE AND CONTINUES TO SAVE MY LIFE.
